Important Dates

Key Tax Deadlines to Be Aware Of

Missing a tax deadline results in automatic penalties from HMRC. The penalties increase the longer the return or payment remains outstanding.

Self Assessment tax return

The deadline for filing a Self Assessment tax return online is 31 January following the end of the tax year. The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April each year.

Payment of Self Assessment tax

Any tax owed through Self Assessment is also due by 31 January. A second payment on account may be due by 31 July.

Corporation tax return

The corporation tax return must be filed with HMRC within 12 months of the end of the accounting period.

Corporation tax payment

Corporation tax is generally due for payment nine months and one day after the end of the accounting period.

Capital gains tax on residential property

A capital gains tax return and payment must be made to HMRC within 60 days of completing the disposal of a residential property. This is a strict deadline and missing it results in penalties and interest.
